Question for those of you in #infosec: How did you first become interested in security?
One of my goals is to help more women of color see security as a possible career choice, so I’m curious to hear about other people’s entry points into the field.

For me, it was through downloading a bunch of AOL Warez as a kid, realizing that there were flaws in AOL’s system, and seeing so many ways that things could be broken. Then once I got into education, my interest shifted to wanting to teach others about how to protect themselves.

All too often when I attend security sessions at tech conferences, I've been the only black woman in the room.
I really do hope that other women of color who are reading this thread might see themselves in some of these stories, and know that they belong in infosec, too.

I originally wanted to become a game dev. I started playing with RPG Maker at age 12, and set up a website to host all my hobby projects. Taught myself PHP to make it dynamic. The indie game dev community back then was hella toxic, so people kept hacking it. This, EnigmaGroup.

Honestly, mostly by accident. I was a dev in the early 2000's and someone from our #infosec team asked if I wanted to join their pentest team. When I mentioned I had no experience in that kind of role, she said "you'll figure it out, that's why I asked you".
Exactly the same scenario as @AlyssaM_InfoSec, except that I had used SQLi to query vendor sites that had shitty interfaces to get data I wanted. It never occurred to me that I could use my knowledge for evil.
