~a year ago, I reflected on who i hadn't seen keynote ISMB. I put together a spreadsheet of each keynote & shared with a few colleagues. I'm thrilled that this has now become a full-fledged study of how / honors are distributed.

Yay! My first rust code is now in sourmash! - I wrote most of it by monkey-see-monkey-do coding, of course. Ended up being a sizable diff because I had to read and understand a lot of behavior (which I then doc/test). Thx to for bearing with!

Science is still done by and for people, and while talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not. Who has the opportunity to become a scientist? How do research questions get prioritized, and which populations benefit from that research? Etc.

If you’re a faculty member who leads a research group, at some point you worked under a PI who had power over you. Now that you’re the one with power, how you treat the people in your group might say more about who you are as a person than anything else you do in your career.

I love this graphic that describes why (meta)genome assemblies break. I took a screenshot of it in May....and forgot to write down where it came from. Does anyone know the source of this wonderful graphic?

Lecturing at students for 50 min straight is clearly not ideal, but finding better options takes experimentation and may be more elusive than we think. Great story in from on the ups and downs of active learning.
