When I hear "swine flu", I think about the 1976 variant that caused widespread panic. Given the presence of the 1918 Spanish flu, I think they're going for historical comparisons.
Not clear what data @nytgraphics graph uses for 'swine flu' and 'avian flu.' Both are major livestock diseases. Neither ever caused widespread human disease (beyond rare sporadic infections of humans).
