    I think it's fairly likely that Biden would have won a general national election among Democrats were it to be held before Iowa, whereas the prolonged primary process exposes his weaknesses and in shows people in the party that it's a bad idea to have him go against Trump.

    The primary process is also a gauge of the degree to which a candidate is able to generate popular enthusiasm and/or shore up institutional support from different parts of the party, which both can be important in a general election.

    Historians used to assume that this was bad for the Mughals ("they spent their resources fighting each other"), but recent scholarship indicates that it was key to the long-term success of the empire, and that they weakened when they stopped doing it

    Reading up on the Mughal empire (excellent book by Munis Faruqui). These guys had a real-life battle royale to the death going on. Fairly far-out from a modern perspective. Why didn't they just talk about their emotions?

    For the history buffs: I think there's an argument to be made that the primary process is a kind of Darwinian battle royal which helps the party get a better nominee in the end, much like how the Mughals did royal succession (the princes raised armies and fought their brothers)

    The intellectual poverty of imagining reform as simply choosing another state to "go first." Do a national ranked choice primary, cowards.
