I'm going to start saying 'monopolization' of the internet instead of 'centralization' because it also incorporates the economic and design models that are harming us, not just the technical architecture which is often misleading.

I'm in a pret and the people next to me are discussing their negotiating position for a £30m investment they want to make today, but they're worried the technology doesn't work. ... 👀 So, stop me if this is mad, but shouldn't you know if the tech works before you spend £30m?

We decided asbestos was a mistake. That smoking in bars and on airplanes was a mistake. That cars getting 10mpg was a mistake. Targeted advertisement is a societal-scale mistake of which we are still unraveling the horrific consequences. Time to ban.

Targeted ads is a very recent phenomenon! It doesn’t have to be our final destination. We can look at the immense harm it has caused to competition and privacy, witness the social goods we lost (like local newspapers) and what we gained (Newsfeed?), and decide this was a mistake!

Why would an advertiser go with Facebook instead of a newspaper or a podcast or some other outlet where ads can align with content, if not for the cheat of targeted ads? Answer: They wouldn’t. Advertising dollars would flow back into the wider economy rather than being FB’ed

If Facebook & Google we’re banned from being able to target ads using their vast trove of personal data, we’d also have taken a huge step towards restoring competitive markets in internet advertising. Their unfair advantage would be wiped out. And they’d have to actually compete.
