When we forget our History we're doomed to repeat it and considering a recent poll showed 42% of Americans DON'T know what Auscwitz is, I'd say we're doomed.
It's psychologocal slight of hand we use to abate our sense of guilt. What's behind saying, "It's not who we are." is really, "It's not who I want to be or who I want to believe we are." It's a simple denial of reality in favor of a story we tell ourselves to reconcile things.
