When I was younger, my mom would always tell me, “Be a woman about it” whenever I faced tough situations. This was her way of making me brave, strong & courageous—just like her. She taught me early & showed me often that "being a woman" means being powerful & not limiting myself.

As we celebrate today, we cannot forget the thousands of families that are still separated due to Trump’s inhumane family separation policy.

I can think of no better time than Mother’s Day to re-commit to ending in America. Each year, 700-900 moms die from pregnancy or childbirth. Tragically, at least 60% of these deaths are entirely preventable.

My mother, Elouise Butler, passed away in 2009. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years. But her lessons continue to guide me every day- To trust God; to be strong, yet kind; to never be afraid to do what I know in my heart is right; and to always give thanks. I love you Mama.
