'optimal results' is quite a claim for nontrivial tasks in general, whether from evolutionary algorithms or not.

It may be a case of a journalist not really writing it quite correctly. I googled and found this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_antenna … -- there it said "[t]he resulting antenna often outperforms the best manual designs [...]". It didn't say anything about "optimal" results.

Yes, it is actually a quite famous example for applied evolutionary algorithms. (I didn't mean to imply that this is a case of con artistry. It's clearly a case of a science journalist/communicator who doesn't actually know the topic very well, or don't care much about accuracy.)
