To be fair, the bit slice operator would be nice to have in C/C++
At least as C++ std library feature this would be great. Because as it turns out, it's pretty tricky to implement this in a way that avoids undefined and implementation defined behavior. Yup, being able to index bits in busses is one of the nicest things about HDL and I miss it every time I do software dev now, why didn't anyone think to implement bitslices/bitselects as opcodes in like, x86?

I think there are some good bit manipulation instructions in one of the x86 extensions. I think they are used for C/C++ bit-packed structs.
