Yup, being able to index bits in busses is one of the nicest things about HDL and I miss it every time I do software dev now, why didn't anyone think to implement bitslices/bitselects as opcodes in like, x86?
I think there are some good bit manipulation instructions in one of the x86 extensions. I think they are used for C/C++ bit-packed structs.
