It's simply the projection of a signal on a basis comprised of complex exponentials - duh!
In my experience people often ask "what is the fourier transform" when instead they should ask "why are complex exponentials a useful basis".
I haven't watched @3Blue1Brown's video yet but I'm sure it is great as always. I always recommend this course: https://see.stanford.edu/Course/EE261

I think most people aren't aware of what a basis is, or even a complex exponential and probably even why one would care :) Only after that can they ask why complex exponentials.

True. However, and this might be a controversial position: Maybe people should learn at least some basic linear algebra (and complex arithmetic of course) before trying to do anything with fourier transforms. We also teach people addition *before* we teach them multiplication.
