alt seems most clear to me, but I recognize _en from something on jjj.de
I think `_ref` would be the most clear implementation. What do you think is the code doing?

.. or if none of them are. I would say that this is least obvious from `_alt`. Very interesting that you find that one most clear. Is it because you are familiar with the (x&(x-1)) pattern for clearing the least significant set bit?
