swap a/b on entry when a>b, so you can use bitshift instead of bitrotate?
I had something like that before, but then decided to get rid of the branch. :)

Sure. And x86 cmovge/cmovle is pretty cheap. But simply rot-shifting is still cheaper overall I think.
