Unfortunately it's really hard to get proper bread in many places, like the US for example. I considered learning how to bake bread..
I know one german-themed bakery in Austin, TX that sells proper bread. Haven't found anything in Berkeley yet.. Pointers are very welcome.

I'd recommend Europe. :) Unless you're looking for sour-dough bread, it's unlikely you'll find *anything* west of the Mississippi river.

Central Texas has a huge German immigrant population. For Berkeley, +1 for Acme Bread. And Maison Bleue for a cafe that uses Acme Bread.
