On the other hand, you could obviously implement a SAT solver using brute force (enumerate and test valuations). Not that it's a good idea.
But that's obviously not what they are talking about in the Motherboard article I quoted above when they say SAT is a brute force method.

Right; I agree with you. The article is just using a more loose sense of the term "brute force" in the context of regular/manual math proofs
