At this rate we are going to get ubiquitous self driving cars on the road before I get to see a sane I2C controller implementation.
The ones I looked at are either bad on the protocol level (e.g. don't support multi-master) or have badly written RTL (thus huge area).

The latter is fixable through good practice, the former, well, will be easier to fix if the RTL is good.
