At this rate we are going to get ubiquitous self driving cars on the road before I get to see a sane I2C controller implementation.

Is a sane I2C controller implementation even theoretically possible? I've dealt with so many bad ones that I've given up hope.

The theory is, that once there is an open source implementation, it will be constantly improved by the crowd. We will see if this is true.

There are open source I2C cores. Nobody want's to improve them bc they are so ugly and there is no active upstream to send patches to.

If this is how the open source HW IP community works, then I have little hope. What is missing?

I wouldn't say anything is missing per se. I'm just saying just because something is OS doesn't automatically mean it's not useless crap.

I'm confident sooner or later someone will write an open source I2C core that is good enough so that people would want to improve on it.

But as long as it is easier to just to write your own one from scratch instead of fixing the existing one, people will just write their own.
