Yeah.. I know of an interface standard that allows for over 5 different physical connectors for exactly that reason.
One of those conns doesn't have enough pins. So it has no signal gnd and the std says you have to connect cases with an extra wire..

putting the signal return path on the external shield.... exactly what you need for good RF isn't it ? :D

yep. Luckily this was very low speed. (A simple control interface in a relatively dumb power application.)
