could talk to all those existing devices and called the whole thing SPI. Other than I2C there is no "SPI standard". 3/
The whole CPOL and CPHA nomenclature just comes from the way that fairly universal controller used to be configured. 4/4

A 5th (and 6th for CPOL=0/1) option would also be to do DDR instead. Doesn't matter though as everyone is migrating to PonyLink :)
