Resource cost?
On the large side. About 1700 LUTs on iCE40 devices. (This is about the size of a PicoRV32 core.)

Interesting :P Could be interesting to compare HW s. SW rates. In SW, could run assembly on the PicoRV32 to do the bit manipulations

PonyLink would be much smaller if it wouldn't be able to send/recv up to 4 bits per cycle (via serdes).
