8 is by definition the floppy drive. Datasette is 1, and the default, so a long as you weren’t loading machine code, you could just use LOAD “*” with no other arguments. For binary load you’d do LOAD “*”, 1, 1 I am also this old.

Typing in pages and pages of data loader code + DATA statements from a magazine in order to play some game that was, in the end, generally pretty disappointing. Though to be fair, these were hand-me-down magazines and computers (but still an early experience for me).
