does anyone have a pointer to a good guide on how to refer to NB folks with they/them equivalents in German? learning all these gendered titles/roles and it feels wonk to know how to say these only for masc/fem

Re titles, in writing there's binnen-I LeherIn to mean either Leherin or Lehrer. But that is still binary. Gendersternchen is generally understood to include other genders: Leher*in But that has issues with screen readers. So now genderdoppelpunkt is replacing it: Lehrer:in
There are no they/them equivalents, unfortunately. One thing one can do is to just use the name over and over again. Many NB people I know use very short names to enable that. Talking about someone whom you don't want to name or gender is hard. I usually use "die person".

In other contexts I’ve heard people use, eg, the first initial of someone’s name (if long and otherwise not easily shortened), as a sort of pronoun substitute. Maybe that could work in other (non English) languages too?

FWIW I think what eventually helped singular they/them work in English (30ish years into gender neutral pronouns), is that it’s also English’s “gender unknown/unspecified” pronoun (“someone left their bag behind, I hope they come back for it”).
