I remembered it from a class once and googled it to confirm. Different definitions would make sense.
Where did you get 4184 from? The SI definition according to Wikipedia seems to be 4186.8. Are there conflicting definitions of kcal? (I would not be surprised. 
)Indeed. Found it: 4184 J/kcal is the definition of "thermochemical kilocalories" (kcal_th). 4186.8 J/kcal is the definition of "international kilocalories" (kcal_IT). I'd guess "international" means SI. The mystery of the missing kcal solved! I'm so relieved.. :D

I don't think calories exist in SI; Wikipedia seems to say it's the "international steam table"?

TIL that the "international kcal" is derived from the "international joule", which is about 1.00019 J, and my head hurts. The "international joule" in turn is derived from the "international ohm" (1.00049 Ω) and "international volt" (1.00034 V). Burn it all down..
