Closing the RISC-V Compliance Gap: Looking from the Negative Testing Side http://www.informatik.uni-bremen.de/agra/doc/konf/2020DAC_ClosingtheRISC-VComplianceGap-LookingfromtheNegativeTestingSide.pdf … this is interesting stuff, would appreciate any comments from @alastair_d_reid if he has timepic.twitter.com/cZybSBBsm2

I wish they would have also tried this out on a RISC-V CPU implementation instead of just simulators. It should be doable using my RTL fuzzer, might need some work to update to the latest version of firesim and Chisel though... https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~laeufer/papers/rfuzz_kevin_laeufer_iccad2018.pdf …https://github.com/ekiwi/rfuzz/

Since undef instructions should all raise an exception and they would do that test in the decoder, RISCV-formal should find those in RTL easily (provided your spec of undef space is accurate).@oe1cxw

As far as the RISC-V spec is concerned all undef instructions are fair game for custom extensions. riscv-formal has an illegal instruction check (rvfi_ill_check) but in its default config it only checks that the zero instruction is illegal (as demanded by the spec).

There is some preliminary work being done on checking ill instruction handling beyond that, and we have already used that to successfully enumerate all custom instructions implemented in an industry core. (even the undocumented ones. ;)

We use our ISS (from our VP) in the fuzzer loop since this allows very fast instr generation. And of course we are already working on an RTL eval / integration.

Cool! Let me know if you are interested in fuzzing RTL on an FPGA (for bigger targets like RocketChip or BOOM). I might be able to spend some time bringing the rfuzz code and dependencies up to date.
