The median *is* an average. The arithmetic mean is a different average. So is the geometric mean (Nth root of the product). Or the harmonic mean (reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals). Carlin is perfectly correct.

Now that really depends on how you measure stupidity. If you use IQ then probably yes, because IQ is pretty much defined through the normal distribution. However, I would argue that for any reasonable metric (not IQ) there's a longer tail on the stupid side than the smart side.
