      no just a blowtorch, i decapped one of the LSI11 ICs like that. you get the lid red hot and then lift it with a magnet. requires very good hand coordination to remove the blowtorch at the exact same time as you remove the lid

      it doesn't (or wouldn't, if i let it heat up). the way i do this i attach a tiny Nd magnet to my tweezers, heat up the package, then get the magnet close enough to grab the lid while removing the blowtorch. you have to do this within 1 second, maybe 2 at most

      the lid suddenly snaps to the magnet once it overcomes the surface tension of the solder it's brazed to the package with, so you really do have to be lightning quick

      The curie point kills permanent magnets, it does not stop magnetism in general.

      It does not "stop magnetism in general", but a ferromagnetic material stops being ferromagnetic if you heat it beyond the curie point. Here is a demonstration of that. (Note that we don't heat the magnet, we heat the metal strip. You can actually see it glowing red.)pic.twitter.com/nBBmzt9LRz
