I was thinking about Jitsi, but I haven't yet looked into it closely because I assumed alternatives to Zoom would not be considered

Have attended a few seminars that used Jitsi. Seems to work ok for that.

Is there a native client for Linux? Because afaict there's only a web client and I just tried it and it seems to have the same issues with screen sharing as google meet (which is to expected because they are using the same browser APIs to do their thing).

Sure does. https://jitsi.org/downloads/ubuntu-debian-installations-instructions/ … Although I've only used it on Android.

I've installed this and afaict I only got components for the server (jitsi-videobridge) and local HTML files for the web-based client (jitsi-meet-web).

Considering I can't find any packages that go beyond what I have already installed I would assume that there is no native Linux client. That would also be consistent with the fact that all screenshots I find for Linux seem to be the web client.

That does seem to be the case. It is written in Javascript so does not need a conventional install. Screensharing in Chrome seems to be via an add-in called Jitsi-Meetings. Not sure how that works in other browsers.

Well, I tried it and it's seems to be using exactly the same mechanism as google meet and that is broken in that it only allows you to share single application windows or the entire desktop (which in my case is three high res screens), but do not allow sharing of a single screen.

Sounds like you are much more expert in these things than me. Good look with your search for a suitable app.

Thanks. As those things usually go it will probably end with me patching chromium to allow sharing of a single screen.. 😆

the confusing thing is that jitsy and jitsy meet are two different things. jitsy meet has a "native" electron app, probably still same problems. my gf is a fan of Microsoft teams. there is also bluejeans, which seems also electron based.
