The term is much older than the 1990s. https://twitter.com/oe1cxw/status/1251456105726779393 …
In this context, no. Sure, in espionage and journalism it was used long before that to refer to information that is widely available (as in "open source reporting"). But Open Source Software was a new term created in 1998.pic.twitter.com/EJk35KkQN0

I remember that year and the online discussions about the *new word* very well. Some felt very emotional about the whole "do we really want a new word, we already have the term 'free software' and we just need to teach everyone what it means" thing.

Do you remember dejanews? How long have you been online? Were you personal friends with Doug Engelbart?

You want to argue. Been there, done that, Jake learned to STFU and stop poking the bear. Not going to do the legwork for you that I already did. Moreover, the WORLD MOVED ON TO FLOSS. No one cares, really.

Obviously you are the person who wants to argue, and yelling insults at me and "WORLD MOVED ON TO FLOSS" isn't going to strengthen your argument in the slightest. *plonk*
