I just received the letter from the Austrian Consulate General in LA that should allow me to travel home without a passport. A big weight is lifted.

If you have the money to pay for psychologist and psychiatrist and psychotherapist out of pocket then yes. If you don't have the money then you are fucked and it can take a year or even longer to get through all the gatekeeping.
And all that gatekeeping is absurd anyway! If you just want to change your name there's no gatekeeping at all. You can do that on a whim. Marry? No problem. Sell your house? Sure! But change a gender marker? You need three brain doctors sign off on it.
