"2/3 or 3/4 of our customers are using HLS" ... I call BS on that statement. Don't get me wrong, Vivado HLS is a great tool, but no way this is true unless they use a very absurd definition of "using HLS". Also: Open sourcing libraries is nice but open source the tools!

Believe it or not! Thats the case. I have seen numbers myself.

Cool! Then you can hopefully clarify: What's the definition of "using HLS" in that statement? What is measured and how is it measured? And 2/3 or 3/4 of wha exactlyt? Companies? Individual users?

Using HLS - developing kernels in openCL/c++ . The number is more like 3/5 . count of kernels developed with HLS out of total kernel within some recent period. AFAIK.

So that's "kernels", not customers. What exactly is a kernel here? I guess not every IP core is a "kernel"? What percentage of Xilinx customers even have custom kernels in der FPGA designs?

Yes kernels are ips. The term comes from CUDA world. Almost all customer will custom ip cores + standard xilinx ips. What he meant was majority customers prefer HLS flow as primary development flow now.

I know the term kernel from CUDA / OpenCL / High-Perf Computing, and I can see how some IP cores implement kernels, but are you saying for example MicroBlaze is now considered a "kernel" in Xilinx lingo? To me that seems a pretty weird use of that word..

No IPs remain to be called as IPs. But there are RTL kernel which instantiate RTL design. But we have to see in perpective that the developers now might not essentially be a hw engg. Just terms, talking what your users understand.

So what is considered a "kernel" then if that's not all IPs? And how does that relate to the original statement of "2/3 or 3/4 of customers are using HLS"? Afaict less than 10% of designers are using HLS for anything at all. https://twitter.com/oe1cxw/status/1225684601865007104 … (100*6.4/(67.5+6.4)=8.66)
