So that's "kernels", not customers. What exactly is a kernel here? I guess not every IP core is a "kernel"? What percentage of Xilinx customers even have custom kernels in der FPGA designs?

Yes kernels are ips. The term comes from CUDA world. Almost all customer will custom ip cores + standard xilinx ips. What he meant was majority customers prefer HLS flow as primary development flow now.

I know the term kernel from CUDA / OpenCL / High-Perf Computing, and I can see how some IP cores implement kernels, but are you saying for example MicroBlaze is now considered a "kernel" in Xilinx lingo? To me that seems a pretty weird use of that word..
