My 12-year old VIC-20 6502 asm programming self would've been interested to hear more about this necessity of a university degree.

Lol, we (neighbor and I) started x86 assembly when we were 14 or so, … ;-) when did you?
-
x86.. idk. I wrote kugelfu when I was 15 and it contains asm code for the graphics stuff. So before that. My first asm code was for 68k (Amiga 500). That must've been around 11yo maybe. But 68k is much easier than x86. :)

They were correct. I mean, I go to work, lay down my diploma on the keyboard, and out comes assembly... oh wait

Huh, I learned 386 assembler at age 14, which helped a lot afterwards while learning C. That’s a weird stance, since it’s much easier than higher level languages.

That's really shit-dumb of the interviewer. Ironically, I heard that universities nowadays no longer routinely teach assembly languages <shrug>. I do have a degree in CS though (and I took assembly course...and learned assembly language [6502!] before even going to university).

I learnt Z80 assembly when I was 13 to program my ZX-Spectrum. It was very useful when years later I had to teach AVR asm to my students at University. The asm of some of my colleagues is very poor, probably because they did not learn it as teenagers :)
