New web developer: So what is a 'px' unit? Old web developer: It stands for 'pixel'. NWD: So 1px is 1 pixel wide? OWD: Oh my no, it has nothing to do with pixels. NWD: ... OWD: ... NWD: Fuck you. OWD: Completely fair.

OWD needs to go back to school. A pixel is a pixel, is a pixel. A pixel is a hardware device. Current highest obtainable screen display resolution is 8K 7680 by 4320 pixels. Use a set aspect ratio to define an 8K screen layout. Use percentage values instead of pixels for sizing.

I mean, a pixel is a real thing, obviously, but in CSS the px unit does not correspond to a hardware pixel.

... I didn't know this. I'm a little concerned about the CSS I wrote recently...

Don't be. A px is not the same size as a screen pixel, but afaiu it is the same size as a pixel in a raster image that is part of the same document. And arguably that's the only thing that matters. I.e. px scales with the objects in your document that are made of pixels.
