I remember an internet that was mostly telnet, ftp, smtp, and gopher. The ISP I worked for had an extra product for people who only wanted smtp mail (via a UUCP-FirstClass gateway).

seriously though... i remember working at Convex and being very proud that we finally got all of our documentation up on our gopher site (gopher://gopher.convex.com/) - literally two days afterwards dan connolly & will scales bring in NCSA Mosaic & start gabbing about HTTP.

I used uucp on a Mac to get email and Usenet for something like five years until my ISP started offering PPP in 1995 or 1996. At the start of that period, the ISP themselves had only a uucp connection to the world.

FirstClass was the first piece of commercial software that I paid for. I had an idea to start a BBS called Zeanet. It ran on my bosses Mac IIcx running System 7. It wasn’t very successful because I had no idea how to market it.

Later I moved a school from FirstClass to Cyrus IMAP and OpenLDAP. We made it relatively seamless because FirstClass stores the passwords in plain text so that we could preseed the authentication DB in OpenLDAP. Teachers didn’t like the new system. They missed having UNSEND.
