I think when you're learning to write code on a new platform it's probably great, and when you're size (etc.) optimizing that code it's probably great, but I think it'd be a huge distraction during the main chunk of getting work done.
But also now I'm thinking I want one for estimated longest delay path through a module
For embedded systems on a microcontroller, strong endorse. I used to have to do a edit/compile/show-assembly loop by hand. There are WCET tools but I don’t know of any embedded in an IDE.
After a while I acquired a good mental model of what the compiler would do. I haven’t yet acquired one for Verilog synthesisers and looking at the synthesised logic is way more hassle than looking at assembly output from the compiler.
