Without looking any of it up, those of you who know the formula for the area of a circle, do you know what "Tau" is in that context?

Depends on the audience.

A note: I'd know what tau is if you mentioned it, but i'm not 100% sure I'd recognize the greek letter if I saw it in an equation…!

i know tau, and i think it's conceptually clearer in trig, circumference, but after answering thepoll i found myself second guessing both my intuition and my recollection of the formula for the area of a circle (haven't used it for years)

I like to think that this is a very intuitive way of remembering that formula. (Imagine the limit of when we split the circle in infinitely many infinitely thin pizza slices.)pic.twitter.com/hsv2pSVoxW

I know of Tau but my maths experience says it results in more awkwardness than Pi and so I prefer the conventional constant

Maybe show equivalence the first time you use it, and that should suffice?

Your poll isn’t the right question to figure out if it’s okay. I know what it is but would still think twice about your usage. People use tau for all sorts of other things like time or stress moduli, whereas lowercase pi is almost never used for anything else.
