Quotation marks are not for emphasis! That's what asterisks are for.

I agree with you on quotes, but can you point me to a reference on this use of asterisks? I am not familiar with it at all. Is this an non-English convention?

Also it is pretty common to use it as markup for bold text, eg. WhatsApp:pic.twitter.com/H7wc1Y5qUS

I think the idea is still emphasis. Like some markdown implementations render *this* italic and others render it bold. Like <em>...</em> in HTML.
