the 8/2(2+2) crowd is almost as annoying as the people who claim that 9.99999... and 10 are different numbers and equally annoying as the people who can't grasp that dividing by zero is as invalid in algebra as it is in arithmetic send tweet

i was with you right until division by zero, there *are* some algebras (e.g. the one Coq uses) where division by zero is perfectly defined

The division by zero thing was a reference to this super annoying meme.pic.twitter.com/EmiXZmkGP8

Isn't the whole point of this meme to prove that you can't do that?

Depends on who yields it. There's this crowd that's using things like that as "party trick" to prove that "math is broken" or something, implying it's the mathematicians who are stupid for spending time on this broken math thing, not them for not knowing any math.

Equally, you can use 10/3=3.3333... and 3.3333...*3=9.9999... to show that 10 and 9.9999... are the same number. But I've only seen it used by people saying they have discovered that math is broken, often implying one way or another that doing math is a waste of time.

I think I accidentally created another one. Idk what's happening! Are schools really that bad at teaching math?https://twitter.com/Ryu_Zoku/status/1158140034819563520 …

Years ago I showed my kid why 0.999... = 1, but when the math teacher heard of this, she said my kid was wrong, wrong, wrong, and nothing we said/wrote could convince her otherwise. A good math lesson, and a better lesson in adults / authority figures are fallible.

Wow. Just.. wow. How is this even possible? This really raises the question: What qualifications are needed to become a math teacher?
