Wow, this is a new one for me. A 2nd referee on a paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.05991 ) submitted to @AAS_Publishing over 8 months ago wants the paper rejected because it was posted to @arxivpic.twitter.com/9bvALVvr30

I thought one reason we have journal editors @AAS_Publishing is to keep a useful discourse between author and referee. This is the 3rd of a few offensive things our editor has done (he agrees with the referee), so I'm a bit at a loss for what to do now...

I agree with the comments about the value of getting input via arxiv posting, & the somewhat limited importance of getting published in a journal, but otherwise this is absurd & completely unacceptable. I’m confident there’s no policy on this.

There's definitely no policy. And while there are reasonable arguments on both sides re: posting to arxiv pre-acceptance, it's a debate about a ship LONG departed for distant seas. Some sub-fields in astro have a *tradition* of posting to arxiv before acceptance.

Proposed easy @AAS_Publishing policy on this: Posting to preprint servers prior to acceptance is entirely within the right of the authors, should they so choose. It will not impact the referee process in any way.

Unless you opt for double blind reviews. Then advice (not a rule): please don’t post to arxiv for reasons I hope are obvious. But you’re right, apj does not care if you preprint it. Never has. @AAS_Publishing

I'd argue that if a reviewer knows their field, they can usually make a pretty good guess who authored a blinded paper either way with a little research. A reviewer simply isn't supposed to actively try to uncover the authors identity by doing stuff like searching or arxiv.

Noticing arxiv papers in your field of study is not “actively searching” arxiv.

True. But I don't get the impression from the OP that that's what happened here. But IDK of course. Also, by this argument people shouldn't read any papers in their field, because very often one can infer a papers author just by being familiar with their previous work.

Which implies double blind reviews might not be the silver bullet to the bias. But right, the OP was not talking about posting on arXiv during a double blind review. I was giving a requested db review as an example of when you shouldn’t preprint.
