Start with a zero-paddle Pong, where the ball just bounces off the four edges of the screen. Then progress to a one-paddle Pong. Finally, a two-paddle Pong.

https://godotengine.org/ might be a bit challenging for someone that age (or maybe not!), in which case maybe https://scratch.mit.edu/ is worth a look. On the less-free side are things like https://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker or Unity. "What kind of game?" is a good starting question.

I wish they’d fix the scratch bug on OS X that requires you to authenticate as an admin every time it is opened. There’s not even an explanation for why this is happening on OS X.

For that age Scratch would be my recommendation. It is not just for making games, so it can be even more fun. All is translated, so kids have no problem using it.

Python seems like a great idea. For a fun "first game", try an avoider game. First have one enemy fall from the top that the mouse has to avoid, followed by an array of unlimited enemies, followed by scoring & different game modes, different enemies, etc...

I taught some classes on introductory programming, and I made a simple game where a smiley face has to avoid doughnuts that fall otherwise it becomes "fat" (scaled bigger) and can't move. Different kids thought of different ways to improve it, which was cool to see.
