Same here on Android. I have it since a week or so I would guess. It's horrible.
But I haven't quite figured out when it does that. Because not all image tweets seem to be effected. My impression is it never does it when it's a reply to another tweet and only to some tweets on the main timeline. I hope they stop this experiment soon.
