And I always thought Germans have no humor, but apparently Americans got no humor. Why is everyone always complaining about April Fools day? Stop being so whiny and have some fun.
In my experience some Americans can have a weird definition of "prank". It's not a prank if it causes real damage to someone, or puts someone at risk of damage. (For example, all the pranks Woz proudly describes in his autobiography are just despicable assholery.)

As a rule of thumb: if you feel like you have to conceal your identify and make sure no one finds out you are the person behind the "prank" because you know everyone would hate you then don't fucking do it.
