Who is behind it? Do you know? I answered either way but I got curious about the way some of the questions were worded

Whoever it is, can you post the results after a few days?

I will ask them. I see no reason why not.

Done! My answers were colored by experiences with ISE and Quartus ... both of which I've struggled to install and neither of which is getting the maintenance attention it needs

Why might you want open source FPGA tools? Because Intel's closed source tool won't install on Ubuntu 18! Seehttps://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P000049OIxWSAW/problems-for-installing-quartus-ii-web-on-ubuntu-1804-lts?language=en_US …

Why support open source FPGA tools over vendor tools? Because once the vendor stops selling their product, they'll stop supporting their tools. Consider Spartan 6 development support for example. See https://forum.digilentinc.com/topic/4472-rants-about-fpga-tool-chains/ … for a discussion.

Why use open source FPGA tools? Because with a single open source synthesis tool supporting multiple pieces of hardware, you don't have to worry (as much) about differences between various vendor tools!

Still waiting for VHDL support :( one day GHDL will integrate with Yosys? Wishful thinking?
