once i rewrote some code like that in SQL proper and reduced runtimes from ~8 hours (per day) to maybe two minutes

I once did the other way… I didn’t want to program grouping, adding up and ordering in PHP, so i just threw the data into an SQL db and did an SQL select right after to get it out in the form I wanted

I kind of want to think that's ok since it's python, but OTOH I've worked too much in projects with people who claim to be too old to learn any sensible languages so they just do everything in Matlab instead which leaves me crying trying to interface their code.

Well, I used to know SQL very well at one point. So it's a different situation. Arguably that's much worse. :)

I guess you know someone who could help out with a little SQL...

Yes, I was thinking about pinging you, but some of that code is so horrible, I'm afraid you won't ever talk to me again after you've seen it. :D I'll just secretly read your book and then claim I knew it all all along.. ;)

To be fair, that's probably faster than the performance you got back when you did it "the right way." Hardware covers many sins.

-
Probably. :D But the database is really small in this case and performance really isn't an issue anyways. It's just that it feels horrible writing it this way, knowing well that's not how it should be done.
