Apparently big/little endian comes from Gulliver's travels. I just learned this from page 45 of the POWER9 ISA spec that that I'm idly reading while the youngest kid refuses to sleep. At least the spec is 1258 pages so I won't run out of things to read if this keeps up

A quote from the book? All of page 45 is a long quote. Someone probably reckoned the spec was too short and needed to be fleshed out a bit

Oh, no, I thought there was a quote about Gulliver's travels!

Seriously? Am I really the only one here who remembers the story of Lilliput and Blefuscu? They are at constant war over the question of whether to open an egg at the big or little end. And Gulliver opens an egg at the wrong end while in the wrong place.pic.twitter.com/GQwg88bQBZ

Not sure if I ever read it, and if I did it was likely in a Swedish translation long before I had to deal with the intricacies of memory storage. Still surprised I never heard of it at some other point though

I read it age ~20 after someone told me that I reminded them of the inhabitants of Laputa. (They have mastered science and technology, but are unable to put it to practical use and their society failing because nobody does the basic work needed to keep everything running.)

I haven't read it since I was about 15... So it's been a while. Probably worth a rereading. I remember enjoying it!

I did enjoy the stories. But I wasn't very impressed with how they were told. (It may be intentionally written this way as it's written as Gulliver's own account, and presumably he is not a great author. :)
