And -- as I elaborate in a forthcoming article -- if he has committed any crimes, he will have to plea bargain while he is still president: his resignation in exchange for total leniency. If he stays until the end, he loses that great bargaining chip.

One of the many things I'll never understand in the US justice system: The practice of letting criminals off the hook in exchange for them resigning elected office. It just encourages corrupt behavior in those officials if they can use their resignation as get-out-of-jail card.

Otherwise, you have a fight on your hands with a corrupt politician still in office doing corrupt things. Do you think Trump will just leave quietly unless he is given a deal? (Agree, though, that he belongs in prison.)

That's what impeachment is for. Also: In some cases you see corrupt officials clinging to their position because they don't want to loose that bargaining chip. So they stay in office despite public pressure to resign, hoping they are offered leniency for their resignation.
