That code had only three nontrivial lines. For some reason they decided to comment all the trivial lines and leave the nontrivial ones completely uncommented. I'm not so much puzzled by the comments on trivial code as on the contrast to the entirely uncommented nontrivial lines.
It's almost as if they copied some code they didn't understand from somewhere and then added a few redundant comments to the trivial lines just to make it look like it's well understood and well commented code.
yeah, comments that explain why the code is using sign scraping would be a start
Been there, done that when I was making a good faith documentation effort but didn't actually understand what I was doing in the nontrivial lines.
