I have so many questions... Aren't those blades in the wrong orientation for it to work? What power source did they put in the frame if they built it years ago? So many people are discussing the WHY but imo that's a boring question with an obvious answer. I wan't to know HOW!https://twitter.com/zoelouisesmithx/status/1048577121742983168 …

LiSOCl2 batteries would work. Might just be a spring / clockwork thing.

That'd be my guess. I think the actual mechanism to shredder isn't powered by anything, otherwise, why would it only shredder half the painting, if you could go all the way? To activate a low-powered RC receiver could've been used.

My question was how did they do it, not how they could have done it. :) I've helped building ASICs for ultra-low power RF sensors that could run for years on a single coin cell. So I know what they could have done. I want to know what they did.

That'll always be a mystery. It's banksy. The guy has been a high-profile target for the last decade and his/its real identity is still unknown.

Sure, but someone else is owning that frame now. If they wanted they could [have someone qualified] take it apart and post documentation online. (Not going to happen it being a piece art art worth over $1M of course, but nothing Banksy could do to stop them.)
