LiSOCl2 batteries would work. Might just be a spring / clockwork thing.
My main questions would be regarding keeping the the RF receiver running for years. (They write in the video that it was built years eariler. So it can't be a "spring / clockwork thing" that triggered it just at the right time.)
I'm not saying any of that is particularly hard to solve. My question it's *not* about how they could have done it. I know plenty of ways how they could have done it. (I did help build ASICs for long-running RF sensors.)
I want to know how they actually did it. Not what choices did they have (this I know already for the most part I think) but what choices did they make.
Could be done with social engineering. Just use batteries (as many as needed) and say they were for the lights. Change as needed.
