I think it is a variation of the sunk cost fallacy. A belief system that reflects reality would be horrifying at this point, to realize what kind of person they supported, so instead they double down on their support in this bizarre way.
Same with the QAnon stuff. And it's all accelerated by an environment where it is okay to believe whatever nonsense you want. Like climate change denial. Or young earth creationism. Or vaccines cause autism. By accepting that nonsense you ultimately end up with Trump Prophecy.
