I just looked at http://flightaware.com (which maps flight routes) and plugged in SFO->Munich. (There are no nonstops to Vienna) -- compare with the great circle mapper (http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=SFO-MUC )pic.twitter.com/WO5dUf4Oid
So maybe Google maps is doing some weird comparison to actual flights? I have zero idea how those databases are even set up. (I do note that Google Maps also does some odd things with NYC subway travel, and I suspect it's because nobody at Google has ever taken a subway).
